Dining and rocking Penguin Chairs

The Penguin Chair by MENU

Dezeen Showroom: Danish furniture brand MENU is relaunching Ib Kofod-Larsen's classic and playful design The Penguin Chair, which was originally designed in 1953.

The name of the piece comes from its streamlined shape as well as its fin-like back and armrests that encircle the user.

The chair was initially created in 1953

The Penguin Chair is made up of an upholstered or wood veneer seat and oversized wood veneer backrest supported by a slim, sculptural metal frame

"Taking its name from the flightless bird, The Penguin Chair has playful yet sophisticated, wing-like flippers that extend from its backrest to embrace the body," said the brand.

The lounge version of the chair is low slung with a wider seat for lounging

Reimagined for a 21st century audience, the chair now comes in three distinct and versatile iterations.

"The Penguin Dining Chair has an upright profile, sized to comfortably fit at a table, while The Penguin Lounge Chair is deep and low, perfectly for reclining and relaxing," it said.

All three iterations are available in a range of finishes and upholstery options

"The Penguin Rocking Chair has the addition of wooden rockers to sway rhythmically and comfortably back and forth."

Its simplicity allows it to integrate into a range of spaces for a variety of purposes.

The chairs are available in oak, walnut or wood veneer combined with a range of upholstery options for the seat.
