Six architecture and design events in August from Dezeen Events Guide

Chart Art Fair, Seattle Design Festival and BIO 27 are among the architecture and design events featured in Dezeen Events Guide this month.

Other events taking place in August include the Oslo Design Fair, a three-day event featuring exhibitions and talks, and the Arne Jacobsen and St Catherine's College conference.

The one-day conference celebrates the college's 60th anniversary as part of the University of Oxford and is centered around Danish architect Jacobsen, who designed the building.

BIO 27 Super Vernaculars
26 May to 29 September, Slovenia

The longest-running design biennale in Europe BIO returns for its 27th edition in Ljubljana, Slovenia.

This year's event has been named BIO 27 Super Vernaculars and the theme focuses on how new approaches to design can resolve global and local challenges.

The four-month biennale is curated by design consultant and writer Jane Withers and includes exhibitions, tours, talks, workshops and a book launch.

More than 50 events are taking place across five key locations in the city: The Museum of Architecture and Design, Cukrarna Palace, Plečnik's Kiosk, the Production Space Krater and a specially created path through Ljubljana.

The event was originally launched in 1963 and has been hosted at the Museum of Architecture and Design since 1972.

Otrivin Air Lab
15 June to 17 September, UK

The London-based architecture and design studio ecoLogicStudio, led by architects Claudia Pasquero and Marco Poletto, presents a new exhibition named Otrivin Air Lab.

The exhibition, which is on display at the Building Centre in London, functions as both an installation and a biodesign workshop.

In the workshop, the air is purified through a process that uses living photosynthetic microalgae. This creates a byproduct of biodegradable polymers, which can be seen by visitors and form the exhibition aspect of the showroom.

The studio is also using technology such as 3D printing and algorithmic design to reduce waste in the process.

IFEX Indonesia
18 to 21 August, Indonesia

This year sees trade show IFEX Indonesia return to the Jakarta International Expo for its seventh edition, which has the theme Redefine/Inspire/Innovate.

The event will showcase furniture, design, craft and art inspired by Indonesia's natural resources.

More than 250 designers and brands will show their products at the marketplace, which aims to serve as a hub of inspiration and innovation.

The event includes B2B and B2C exhibitions, seminars and networking opportunities.

Seattle Design Festival
20 to 26 August, USA

Seattle Design Fair is organised by the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Seattle and takes place across the city of Seattle, USA.

The festival starts with the SDF Sneak Peek party on 4 August, followed by the core events that run from 20 to 26 August.

More than 50 events will take place throughout the week, including exhibitions, installations, workshops, tours, performances and the concluding SDF closing party.

The event was founded in 2011 by AIA and has continued to run every year since, with each festival following a theme. The theme for 2022 is connection, with the festival set to explore how design can create a physical connection between objects and an emotional connection between people.

Design Helsinki
24 to 25 August, Helsinki

The two-day design festival Design Helsinki debuts in Finland's capital in 2022 with a range of events taking place across the city.

The festival will include showroom events, exhibitions, installations and talks that showcase the work of international interior designers.

A pavilion located in the centre of Helsinki is set to feature more than 40 brands and more than 40 resident design showrooms. The showrooms have created a programme of talks and workshops for the attending architects, designers, dealers and retailers.

Throughout the two-day event, designers will be able to network with brands and view products from furniture, lighting, textiles, surfaces and flooring.

Design Helsinki is the first Nordic event from architecture and design events organiser Media10.

Chart Art Fair
26 to 28 August, Denmark

This year is the 10th edition of the Nordic art and design fair Chart Art Fair, which takes place in Copenhagen, Denmark.

The 2022 event programme includes a collaboration ​​between Nordic galleries as well as an art book fair, talks and performances.

As part of the fair, the finalists in the Chart Architecture competition will be revealed. The competition will feature pavilions from architects, designers and artists, designed to showcase the crossover between the three mediums.

To celebrate its 10-year anniversary, Chart Art Fair is partnering with the amusement park Tivoli Gardens and will showcase 15 installations across the park.
