Construction has begun on the 126 East 57th Street skyscraper designed by architecture studio ODA on New York City's Billionaire's Row.
The 386-foot (118-metre) skyscraper will be the latest high rise in the district of Uptown Manhattan, which is known for residential skyscrapers with supertall heights and high price tags.
Developed by MRR 1326, the 28-storey residential tower will stretch between 56th and 57th Streets and contain 175,000 square feet (16,258 square metres) of apartments.
While most of the mass of the tower is on the 56th street side its entrance, which will be a six-storey-tall mirrored copper "gateway", will be on 57th street.
On the 56th street side, the main aspect of the building features a slightly tapered structure. Certain aspects of the facade will appear to be subtracted from the whole, making it seem pixelated.
ODA explained that the design was inspired by fractal patterns.
"We see fractal design as the repetition of forms and organic geometries that at different scales naturally create intimate moments and points of connection in architecture, the push and pull of cantilevers offer indoor and outdoor spaces that connect people to nature," Â said ODA founder Eran Chen.
"The fractal design breaks down the scale of the 30-story tower as it comes down to meet the ground," he told Dezeen.
The structure will hold 175 units varying in size from studios to three-bedroom apartments.
Where the structure doesn't make room for patios in the fractal subtractions made from it, semi-open outdoor spaces are planned.
"This building brings a human scale, playfulness and visual interest to this upscale corridor of 57th Street," added Chen.
On the sublevels, the architecture studio has made room for the amenities that will include sports and spa facilities as well as a swimming pool.
Above ground, public area and lounges will be on the second storey while the 11th storey will have a party room with a prep kitchen.
Each of the penthouses will have access to a private roof terrace and the building will have public rooftop space for the rest of the residents.
"As New York City slowly transforms Midtown East to a residential destination, we strive to offer a contemporary outlook for the tastemakers and young professional buyers who value high design," said Chen.
ODA has selected New York-based Gabellini Sheppard for the interior design.
This year on Billionaire's Row, the skinniest skyscraper in the world, a supertall tower at 111 W 57th Street by SHoP Architects, reached completion.
Other projects by ODA include an upcoming skyscraper in Seattle, which Dezeen featured among six supertall skyscrapers planned to be built in North America.
