Dezeen and Holcim launch Concrete Icons video series with Ma Yansong interview
Dezeen is teaming up with Holcim to launch Concrete Icons, a new video series profiling the most iconic contemporary concrete buildings by the world's leading architects.
The series will comprise six short videos telling the stories behind striking concrete buildings around the world, based around interviews with the architects behind them.
Each instalment will explore how and why concrete was used in each project, as well as what the future holds for the material.
Architects appearing in the first three instalments of the six-part series will include Elizabeth Diller, founder of New York film Diller Scofidio + Renfro, Ma Yansong, founder of Beijing practice MAD Architects, and Mexican architect Tatiana Bilbao.
Concrete Icons will launch on Thursday this week with an exclusive video interview with Yansong about MAD Architects' Haikou Cloudscape Library. The building is a sinuous library cast in seamless white concrete on the coast of the Chinese island of Hainan.
In the video, Yansong explains how the fluid properties of concrete are uniquely matched to MAD Architects' amorphous approach to architecture.
Further instalments in the series will focus on Diller Scofidio + Renfro's Broad Museum in Los Angeles, USA, and Tatiana Bilbao's Casa Ventura in Monterrey, Mexico.
Concrete Icons is presented in partnership with building materials company Holcim. Last year, Holcim collaborated with Block Research Group, Zaha Hadid Architects and incremental3D to build a 16-metre-long 3D-printed concrete footbridge.
