Bilbao chair by Tim Rundle for Morgan
Dezeen Showroom: British furniture brand Morgan collaborated with industrial designer Tim Rundle on a curvaceous chair that has a statuesque silhouette.
The Bilbao chair is named after the city of Bilbao in northern Spain and more specifically the biomorphic forms of architect Frank Gehry's Guggenheim Museum Bilbao.
The chair is made using a duo of inventive upholstery techniques – the organic shapes are made using sculpted foam, which is covered with fabric pulled taut over the curves.
"I have a strong interest in how historical furniture typologies evolve over time," said designer Tim Rundle. "Bilbao pays homage to 1920's Central Europe."
"In designing furniture, we acknowledge that we are evolving existing typologies," Rundle continued. "However, we always ensure our new pieces are fully contemporary in their attitude, with a reductive approach to detailing and strong consideration of mass production."
Bilbao is made to order in a variety of finishes.
The collection is expanding with the addition of a sofa and timber-based lounge chair, which will be launched at Clerkenwell Design Week 2023, taking place from 23 to 25 May 2023.
