In this video produced by Dezeen, architecture studio TP Bennett explains how its fully electric office building in Leeds is designed to "improve the health and wellbeing" of its occupants.
Named 11 & 12 Wellington Place, the building draws from the aesthetic of the site's former use as a railway station, featuring a bronze and silver facade that references the colours of railway tracks. "The design narrative was really to show the building was cast in place," Leaver said.
According to TP Bennett director Andrew Leaver, the building was designed to be one of the most sustainable contemporary offices in the UK.
"The building is the first NABERS design-reviewed five-star building outside of London, which achieves a BREEAM outstanding rating and a Fitwel two-star rating," Leaver explained in the video.
The 24,000-square-metre building was formed of two blocks connected from level four and above, which offers a range of different sized floor spaces for future tenants.
"They were linked from level four and above, which creates smaller floor plates at lower levels and larger floor plates at upper levels, which is fantastic for offering a range of sizes for potential customers," explained Miles Jones, senior development manager at developer MEPC.
Jones explained that the building was designed to be "incredibly sustainable in its operational energy".
It features green-planted walls in reception areas to create a soft ambience and its large glazings on upper floors flood the space with daylight and provide expansive views.
"It's all electric, there's no gas, so no fossil fuels are used in the running of the building," Leaver explained. "There's also roof terraces so people have access to outdoor spaces."
"As architects, we have a collective responsibility to not only respect the environment, but improve the health and wellbeing of the occupants who use the buildings," Leaver added.
"And in that respect, we see this building setting a very high bar."
