Promotion: British designer Paul Smith has applied his signature stripes to an outdoor furniture collection made in collaboration with Italian brand De Padova.
The outdoor furniture collection builds upon the original Paul Smith + De Padova Everyday Life collection, which was launched last year.
The initial instalment, which included sofas, poufs and armchairs as well as coffee tables and leather accessories for the living room, has been extended to include outdoor pieces made using outdoor fabrics and iroko wood frames.
A modular sofa – designed for the indoors – has also been added to the collection, which can be assembled and arranged in a number of shapes.
The new outdoor upholstery pieces match the clean-lined silhouette of the indoor pieces and feature the same strap details and contrast stitching, which is made from ethyl vinyl acetate (EVA) instead of leather.
"We have expanded and perfected the collection to adapt it to the different needs of modern living, be it in an airy city apartment or in a cottage by the sea," said Paul Smith. "I am happy to say that the modern home is extending to the outdoors."
"The garden is the new living room."
The new collection also sees the brand switching out standard materials for more sustainable alternatives for its indoor products. This includes recycled goose feathers, Kapok – a seed fibre similar to cotton that lends elasticity to the padding – and Hemp, a highly durable, natural fibre whose cultivation does not require pesticides or herbicides and is also able to regenerate the soil.
"With this second season Paul Smith enters the pantheon of De Padova designers, a gallery that includes some of the great masters of Italian and international design," said Roberto Gavazzi, CEO of Boffi and DePadova.
"He contributes to creating a coherent vision, which is based on emotions and dreams of which the products are the natural outcome."
Paul Smith opened his first shop in his home city of Nottingham in 1970. He made a name for himself first and foremost as a fashion designer with an intuitive approach to design and a love of colourful stripes.
Today, Paul Smith has 130 boutiques in over 60 countries, selling not only clothing but also furnishings, pieces of art and various objects that the designer-entrepreneur selects personally.
