Sunset rug by Alejandra Gandía-Blasco for Gan
Dezeen Showroom: designer Alejandra Gandía-Blasco undertook a complex colour study to translate the intensity of the sun meeting the horizon over the sea into the Sunset rug, created for Spanish brand Gan.
Made of pure wool, the Sunset rug is hand-knotted by artisans in India in a spectrum of 12 red and orange tones. It is made up of 150,000 individual knots per metre square.
Gan describes the piece as part of Gandía-Blasco's "exploration into making the intangible tangible".
The designer, who is also the creative director of Gan, began with a photo she had taken of a sunset, treating it as an abstract image and breaking down its colour composition and gradation.
She then mapped out the tones by identifying them in the Chromatone system to find their equivalents in wool and a hand-knotting technique that involves thousands of precise knots was chosen to create the rug.
The finished design is available in two sizes and is said by Gan to bring personality and the potential to stir emotion into any room.
"Sunset has character," said Gandía-Blasco. "I imagine it near windows, dining rooms with glass doors, spaces with views of the outdoors, natural spaces, places where you can contemplate the sunset and enjoy the last light of the day."
