The growth of artificial intelligence (AI) has prompted academics to discuss the increased environmental implications that it will have on the planet.

Experts have found that the information and communications technology (ICT) sector is estimated to account for at least two to four per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions.

"AI may hold a promissory, high-tech vision of the future, but wherever that AI will live, it will look very beige, it will look unremarkable, it will have a huge impact on water tables and it will require a lot of electricity," warned technology and climate researcher Anne Pasek.
