Promotion: art venue Cromwell Place is gearing up to be west London's hub during London Design Festival, with exhibitions featuring designers from Pentagram to Rio Kobayashi.
For the duration of the London Design Festival (LDF) from 16 to 24 September 2023, Cromwell Place will serve as the hub for the Brompton Design District, which is home to leading museums, galleries, showrooms and fashion destinations.
The Design at Cromwell Place programme includes seven exhibitions – three from LDF's main programme and four that are part of the partner programme and curated for Brompton Design District by design studio Jane Withers Studio.
For the first time, there will also be a symposium covering art, design and interiors.
From the main programme, the exhibition Bags of Art and Design shows the results of a collaboration between global design studio Pentagram, art supply retailer Cass Art and eco accessories brand Bags of Ethics, for which the designers created a series of tote bags to fit multiple sizes of drawing pad.
A limited number of bags will be available for sale at the exhibition as LDF exclusives.
There is also Kaorium by Scentmatic, an installation that aims to combine the experience of olfactory discovery with intuitive language, bridging the usual divide that exists between fragrance salespeople and consumers. It promises to use innovative technology to deliver "olfactory moments of delight".
Meanwhile, the Korean specialist gallery Lloyd Choi will present Untold Beauty, an exhibition presenting works by contemporary practitioners from the country that reflect on the ceramics and crafts of the Joseon dynasty, which are being appreciated for their materially mindful approaches.
The Withers-curated exhibitions respond to a shared theme, Conviviality – The Art of Living Together.
There's also Phase 2, an exhibition signalling the return of collaborators Peter Pilotto and Christopher De Vos, this time as they go beyond fashion to enter the realm of interiors with pieces including Nepalese hand-knotted rugs and English hand-painted and lacquered furniture.
Design brand The New Craftsmen will present Join, Assemble, Hold, an installation of two adjoining crafted interiors centring on statement cabinet centrepieces, and the Royal College of Art will show The Other Side of Product, an exhibition of work by their design students and graduates.
On 22 September, Cromwell Place will play host to the symposium Harmonising Spaces – Art, Design and Interiors, co-curated by Cromwell Place and writer, gallerist and curator Helen Chislett.
The day will feature three-panel discussions and feature speakers including design writer and communicator Henrietta Thompson, Studio Mackereth founder Sally Mackereth, interior designer and Studio Mae co-founder Mima Romanic, and art advisor and Art Room London founder Vanita Barany.
Having opened in 2020 in a set of Grade II listed Victorian townhouses in South Kensington, Cromwell Place is an art venue with 14 gallery spaces as well as a restaurant and bar named Cromwell Place Cafe.
It is once again serving as the hub for the Brompton Design District, which covers the area around Kensington, South Kensington, Knightsbridge and Chelsea.
