Promotion: as part of Design Miami, bathroom brand Kohler has unveiled an installation celebrating the launch of its Formation 01 faucet created by British designer Samuel Ross.

Named Terminal 01, the installation included two bright orange faucets positioned across from each other. The faucets have sharp angles, designed to create a streamlined flow of water throughout the space, and were mounted on an escutcheon plate crafted from cast iron.

Digital screens in the installation showcased the engineering behind harnessing tap water, while ambient sounds enveloped the space, "echoing the tranquil yet powerful essence of moving water", the brand said.

The installation aimed to show the "precise craftsmanship" that goes into Kohler's designs and in particular, the Formation 01 bathroom faucet recently developed by Ross and his industrial design studio SR_A.

"The bold, dramatic design of Terminal 01, like the faucet itself, aims to reinvent the daily engagements with water and invites visitors to control and affect the flow and intensity of water travelling towards the centre of the space," said Kohler lead industrial designer Gary Clarke.

"While we watch the water flow through the installation, we are called to reflect on our relationship with the element, the forms that transport it and the expectation we have of this experience."

The colour of the faucets – named Haptic Orange – was a reference to the 1967 debut of Kohler's orange bathroom line called Tiger Lily and aimed to embrace the idea of pushing the boundaries of "materials, form and colours".

"Establishing a new relationship to water through engineering and aesthetics is at the top of my mind," said Ross. "Expertise within the remit of engineering flourish within Kohler’s on-site eco-system, and the opportunity to work with specialist artisans and engineers was essential in taking a raw concept and transforming it into a scalable remit."

The installation was accompanied by several events as part of Design Miami, including a panel discussion between Ross, Kohler chair and CEO David Kohler, co-founder of Design Miami Craig Robbins and curatorial director of Design Miami Anna Carnick.

In addition to Terminal 01, Kohler also launched a new augmented reality experience, which allows visitors to place Formation 01 in "any setting of their choice, from their home to a public space".
