Prototypes included a bench named Smokestack Unit 001 by designer Bill Carroll.
Made from moulded pigmented sawdust, the bench was designed for a functional assembly similar to a set of Lego, with six colourful parts including four repeating components and two longer beams.
Design studio Common Object created a set of biodegradable stools and self-supporting space dividers made from local wool waste and salvaged wood.
Common Object is comprised of designers Fernando Ramirez and Justin Beitzel, with Beitzel focusing his efforts on the intersection of agriculture and design, working with farmers who are growing materials such as wool and hemp and Ramirez working with urban communities to help shape the studio's regenerative thinking.
LA-based knitwear and clothing designer Sam Klemick created a communal seating structure named Play Station that utilises geometric shapes and is made from salvaged Douglas Fir and dead stock fabrics.
Klemick founded her studio after observing the effects of fast fashion on the environment and draws on the principles of circularity in her designs.
Dezeen partnered with Haworth to host a talk about this year's DesignLab initiative inside the showroom with the designers, which was moderated by Dezeen's US editor, Ben Dreith.
The brand also showcased 14 new products at their showroom at The Mart during NeoCon, including a modular lighting system named Pantaya, which was a collaboration between Haworth, Patricia Urquiola and Pablo Pardo, and a new ergonomic chair named Breck.
According to the brand, over half of the Breck chair is made from recycled material and consists of four pieces designed to be assembled in under one minute.
Haworth was founded in Michigan in 1948. The furniture brand extended its presence at NeoCon by taking over the lobby of the Mart as well as creating a visitor experience on the Mart's River Park Plaza where guests could preview new products from Haworth’s Janus et Cie brand.
