Mi Luo City Duan Wu Community Villager Relocating Project resettled almost 400 rural families

ZaoZuo Architecture Studio won residential project of the year with the Mi Luo City Duan Wu Community Villager Relocating Project in Yueyang City, China.

It is a rural resettlement housing project, involving the demolition and resettlement of nearly 400 rural families in six local villages.

"I was surprised when we received the award for residential architecture last year," lead architect of ZaoZuo Yue Shen told Dezeen.

"Perhaps the justification for us winning came from the project's social value, with the award focusing on the project's public good."

Exponents of experimental design, lead architect Liyu Cheng reminds participants to express their originality: "Whether you are an expressive or more conservative designer, try to communicate in your own way and see how your ideas stand among numerous other design works."

Shisuo Design renovated the early 20th-century Somekh Building in Shanghai's historical and cultural district on the Bund

Shisuo Design's Somekh Building renovation in Shanghai claimed heritage project of the year.

The studio explained why the complex nature of such projects meant that they were pleased to be recognised. "Compared with new sites, the renovation projects need to solve more complex problems and demand more comprehensive capabilities from today's designers," Shisuo Design co-founders Sanif Xu and Chang Shan said.

"The renovation of a historic building is not just about restoring and presenting history, but also requires careful and precise intervention to create new spaces that both follow historical precedents and meet current functional needs."
