Dezeen Showroom: created by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec for Ligne Roset, the Ploum sofa combines stretchy fabric with button-like detailing to create a unique and instantly recognisable shape.
The Ploum sofa was first released in 2011 and designed by the Bouroullec brothers to deliver exceptionally high levels of comfort.
They used generous proportions and a combination of two materials – foam and stretchy upholstery – to achieve this aspiration, with the multiple points of stitching creating a domed appearance similar to button cushioning.
"We attempted to make a very comfortable contemporary settee," said the Bouroullecs. "Ploum is a vast shape on which the whole body rests on a soft, welcoming surface."
Ploum's sculptural shape is supported by an internal frame made of tubular steel and wire mesh, around which foam in varying densities is layered.
The upholstery options are woven quilted fabrics that further add to Ploum's individuality while being soft and inviting to the touch.
