Frank Gehry
The architecture of Frank Gehry has always popular with Dezeen readers. Recently though he became almost better known for a spontaneous finger gesture.
At the end of 2014, the Canadian-born, Los Angeles-based architect described 98 per cent of new buildings are "pure shit" and stuck his middle finger up at a group of journalists. It caused such a stir that people were still reading about it in droves this year.
Gehry, 87, managed to build on this newfound reputation with a handful of contentious new projects. These included a masterplan for the revitalisation of the Los Angeles River, which was fiercely criticised by a local landscape architect, and a huge development along LA's famous Sunset Strip.
We also revealed that work has still not started on the new Guggenheim museum that the architect has designed for Abu Dhabi.
But on a lighter note, the year also saw Gehry try his hand at yacht design. A keen sailor himself, he designed and built his own boat.
