Renzo Piano
New residential skyscraper proposals for London, New York and Miami helped Italian architect Renzo Piano climb to number 22 in our Hot List.
Unfortunately for Piano – designer of The Shard in London – the most-viewed project also proved to be the most controversial. The 72-storey tower he designed for London's Paddington provoked such a strong outcry that Piano was forced to scrap his design just four months after it was unveiled.
This year Piano's firm, Renzo Piano Building Workshop, also developed designs for a 25-storey apartment tower in New York and a 17-storey beachfront condo block in Miami.
These projects a part of wider boom in luxury architect-designed residential towers in Manhattan and the frenzied real-estate market in Miami.
They also come on the back of the success of Piano's new building for the Whitney Museum of American Art, which opened in Manhattan's Meatpacking District in early 2015.
But the studio hasn't spent the last year entirely preoccupied with skyscrapers. It also revealed plans to transform a Moscow power station into a new venue for contemporary art, and completed a whopping new park, library and theatre complex in Athens, thanks to one of the largest donations for a cultural building project in history.
