Serpentine Galleries sit atop our Institutions Hot List
This is a UK-heavy list, with six of the top 10 based in Britain. It's perhaps inevitable that London's Serpentine Galleries comes out as the top institution, given that the annual Serpentine Gallery Pavilion commission is one of the most eagerly anticipated events in the calendar, with the gallery scoring a coup by this year commissioning Bjarke Ingels – the superstar Danish architect is number two in our overall Dezeen Hot List – to design this year's structure.
UK art franchise Tate storms to second place thanks to the new Tate Modern extension in London by Herzog & de Meuron. UK cancer charity Maggie's is at number three on behalf of the series of innovative care centres it has commissioned from leading architects.
Fourth is the Royal Institute of British Architects, partly for giving its Royal Gold Medal to Zaha Hadid this year, with the ceremony taking place shortly before she unexpectedly died.
Elsewhere on the list, London's Design Museum manages number eight despite having a quiet year as it prepares to reopen later in November. Its spectacular new home in the former Commonwealth Institute building should ensure the museum achieves a higher ranking in next year's Hot List.
