World Interior of the Year 2017 shortlist announced
There are 78 projects contending for this year's World Interior of the Year, including a mathematics gallery designed by Zaha Hadid Architects and the office Neri&Hu created inside an old missile factory.
Projects by Eric Parry Architects, Universal Design Studio, Allford Hall Monaghan Morris and Heneghan Peng Architects also made it onto the shortlist for the award, which is part of the programme for Inside World Festival of Interiors.
Dezeen is media partner for this year's edition of the interior design festival, which takes place at Arena Berlin from 15 until 17 November 2017, coinciding with the World Architecture Festival (WAF).
The 78 shortlisted projects submitted include practices in America, Japan, Australia, Mexico, India and Europe. They are divided into nine categories, ranging from bars and restaurants to residential, and transport.
Amsterdam studio UXUS is shortlisted in the retail category for the shop it designed for the Herzog & de Meuron extension to the Tate Modern gallery in London, while the Airbnb headquarters designed by Dublin practice Heneghan Peng Architects are commended in the office category.
"Many of the shortlisted designs concern the way that interiors help us to live, work and play more efficiently and more enjoyably," said Paul Finch, who is the programme director for Inside and WAF.
"This is appropriate in a year when our conference theme is 'performance', which will examine how elements like colour, acoustics and volume contribute to the success of new and refurbished interior projects."
A winner for each category will be named, and the World Interior of the Year will be selected from these. It will be named during a gala dinner on the final evening of the three-day festival.
Last year's winner of the World Interior of the Year award was a clothes shop in Hangzhou with matt black surfaces.
The winner of the World Building of the Year 2017, whose shortlist was unveiled last week, will also be announced at the dinner.
