Dave Hakkens
Dave Hakkens is a Dutch designer on a quest to battle plastic through design, from reducing e-waste to making informative videos.
A graduate of Design Academy Eindhoven, Hakkens gained worldwide attention for his 2013 graduation project Phonebloks, a a concept for a modular mobile phone intended to reduce electronic waste.
The project won the social vote at the Design Museum's Design of the Year Awards 2014, which triggered Google’s interest in developing the devices.
While still a student Hakkens started designing his Precious Plastic recycling machines, and today the project, for which Dave won the Social Design Talent Award, has turned into a worldwide movement.
Hakkens’s goal is to make the world a better place by making things, be it an inspirational video, machines to recycle plastic or a phone concept. He was named one of the 500 most newsworthy forces in world design in the 2017 Dezeen Hot List.
