Dezeen promotion: the winners of this year's A' Design Award and Competition include a cinema in China and a retreat on a Norwegian fjord.

The annual A' Design Awards aim to recognise the "best products, projects and services worldwide that demonstrate superior design, technology and creativity".

In the 2017/2018 edition of the awards, 1,962 winners from 100 countries were recognised in 99 different design disciplines.

One of the winners was the Malangen Family retreat on the Malangen peninsula near Tromsø in northern Norway, designed by studio Snorre Stinessen. The house comprises a collection of blocks that each contain one of the cabin's rooms.

The timber house has large windows that provide views across the surrounding forrest and fjord. The majority of the cabin's furnishings, including the dining table, benches, beds, wardrobes and fireplace, were also designed by Stinessen.

Another winner in Norway was Hadar's House, a small coastal residence that over looks the Norwegian Sea and the neighbouring coastal islands.

The timber house is divided into two volumes. Built on a concrete slab on the ground, the first timber box contains the house's entrance and a bathroom. The second box is raised on wooden pillars above a cliff and house's the kitchen, living room and a loft for sleeping.

Another winner in the architecture, building and structure design category, the Da Chang Muslim Cultural Center Cultural in northern China was designed by Hejingtang Design Studio.

The Muslin cultural centre, built for a community on the outskirts of Beijing, contains a theatre, exhibition, convention and community centre.

In western China, the Impression Nanxi River Multifunctional Hall, in Yongjia county, was also a winner in the architecture, building and structure design category.

Designed by Ting Wang the hall has a glass facade with steel columns to allow visitors and passers by to observe the activities taking place with the building.

Also in China, the Wuhan Wushang Mall Cinema designed by Ajax Law and Virginia Lung of One Plus Partnership was another winner. Claiming an award in the interior space, retail and exhibition design category, the cinema in Wuhan uses 2.8-metre0-diameter steel plates, based on the shape of film reels, to form a giant entrance display.

Inside the cinema's auditorium, the ceilings and walls are lined with small discs made from sound absorbing panels, designed as another reference to film reels.

Another winner in the interior space, retail and exhibition design category is a wine shop in Valladolid, Spain, designed by Zooco Estudio. Called De Vinos Y Viandas, the interior of the wine shop is made from layers of timber screens with arches and circular shapes cut from them.

Bottles are stored in wine racks arranged down either side of the store, while a folding table attached to a central column provides a flexible space that can be used for sales.

All 1,962 winners of the A' Design Awards received a trophy and had their project descriptions translated into 20 languages.

Architects and interior, industrial, product, fashion, communication and service designs can now register to enter the next edition of the awards.
