Chinese architects and designers make big impact on Dezeen Awards
With the Dezeen Awards shortlists due to be announced next week, here's a detailed look at the geographical diversity of the architecture and design studios in the running.
There are 53 different countries represented across our four longlists, making Dezeen Awards one of the world's most international awards programmes for architecture and design.
The big surprise is China, which has the fourth largest number of entries of the longlists – a total of 62 – marking its emergence as a design powerhouse.
Chinese architecture studios in the running include established firms including MAD, Archi-Union Architects and Vector Architects, as well as emerging offices like WEI Architects and Monoarchi.
Interior design firms vying for awards include Beijing-based Office AIO and Shanghai studio Atelier Zerebecky, while the design longlist includes Shenzhen-based JU&KE.
Europe has more entries on the Dezeen Awards longlist than any other continent, showing its continued dominance of the global design scene.
The country with the highest number of entries longlisted is the UK, with 132, followed by the USA with 106 and Australia with 74.
Vietnam, Thailand and Japan also made the top 20, as did Mexico.
Other countries on the longlists include Lebanon, Iran, Bahrain, Colombia, Latvia, Kuwait and Serbia.
Dezeen Awards launched this year, aiming to spotlight the world's best new architecture, design and interiors projects, as well as the studios and individual architects and designers producing outstanding work.
The programme attracted more than 3,689 entries from all over the world. After entries closed on 30 June, Dezeen's editorial team selected 673 projects and 79 studios, across architecture, interiors and design, for the longlists.
The shortlist for the Dezeen Awards, selected by our stellar panel of judges, is due to be announced next week.
