Azusa Murakami

Portrait of Dezeen Awards 2019 judge Azusa Kurakami

Japanese architect Azusa Murakami is co-founder of London-based, multi-disciplinary design collective Studio Swine.

Azusa Murakami established Studio Swine with British artist Alexander Groves in 2011 after graduating from the Royal College of Art. An acronym for super wide interdisciplinary new explorers, the studio creates immersive experiences through art and architecture. Its projects include a towering ceramic sculpture at the Eden Project, a tree-like sculpture for fashion brand COS with mist-filled bubbles and vulcanised black rubber furniture designed for Henry Ford's utopian city.

The British-Japanese design duo have recently completed a six-month residency at Brooklyn creative hub A/D/O, culminating in a kinetic installation of fog paintings and plasma-filled glass tubes in January earlier this year. Known for their use of unusual materials, the pair explained to Dezeen how the exhibition demonstrated the potential for using technology within art and architectural spaces.

Studio Swine's multi-disciplinary work has been internationally exhibited, including London’s V&A, the Pompidou Centre in Paris and at the Venice Architecture Biennale.
