Dezeen's deputy editor Tom Ravenscroft spoke to a panel of experts about how digital tools are changing the way we build in this talk filmed by Dezeen from Knauf's Clerkenwell showroom.

Held in the London showroom of building material manufacturer Knauf, the panel discussed how digital tools and processes, such as building information modelling (BIM) and parametricism, are shaping the built environment.

BIM is used to create digital representations of the physical and functional characteristics of a space and is frequently used in architecture and construction.

Parametricism refers to a design approach that uses algorithms to dictate the form a building takes according to parameters like the flow of people through the space. The term was coined by the principal of Zaha Hadid Architects Patrik Schumacher.

On the panel was Mauro Sabiu, architect at Zaha Hadid Architects, Aurélie de Boissieu, BIM manager at Grimshaw and Benedict Wallbank, BIM strategy manager at Viewpoint.

Sabiu has worked as an architect at Zaha Hadid Architects since the summer of 2017 and has previously worked for Perkins+Will.

De Boissieu is the office BIM manager at Grimshaw. She has previously worked at Heatherwick Studios and has a PhD in computational design. Wallbank is the BIM strategy manager for UK construction software consultants Viewpoint.

The talk was held in Knauf's London showroom which opened last year during Clerkenwell Design Week.
