Shortlisted for rural house of the year at Dezeen Awards 2019, Springhill House is a steel clad retreat in Melbourne by Lovell Burton.
Designed for an author seeking a change from inner-city life, the architecture studio created Springhill House as a rural retreat and place for reflection. The project draws on ideas of utility, function and a respectful relationship with its environment. Combining the forms of nearby agricultural sheds with more typical Australian house typologies, Springhill House's circulation has been pushed to its perimeter to create a veranda sheltered by an arcade of wooden columns. A large roof stretches beyond the enclosed spaces to act as a place-maker, defining the area of habitation from the expanse of the paddock.
