Shortlisted for residential rebirth project of the year at Dezeen Awards 2019, House on the Great Wall by MDDM Studio is a 20th century structure transformed into a contemporary home.
Located in a mountainous area near the Great Wall of China, the existing structure, built entirely of natural stone, was originally built in the middle of the 20th century as underground storage for fruit trees. The architecture studio has created contemporary minimalist living spaces set amongst these aged stone walls. As well as preserving the storage unit's walls that are inlaid with rough chunks of stone, they added windows to give ample access to natural light and views of the hilly terrain. MDDM Studio also connected the rectangular volume to another property that the client owns on the south side of the property, overlooking the roof of the underground storage, to form larger living quarters.
