Shortlisted for installation design of the year at Dezeen Awards 2019, Brawn and Bread is an outdoor bakery in a New England forest by London-based practice Studio Micat that is powered by people's workouts.
Built by children aged 11-17 at Beam Camp, a summer camp in New Hampshire, the "human-powered bakery" dressed up as an outdoor gym requires a full body workout to load grain into a gravity-fed hopper, mill it, knead the dough and chop logs to fuel a wood fired oven. The Brawn and Bread structure is designed to highlight how distanced people have become from the physical effort required to make food. Rather than using sources of power like electricity, it only functions on human exertion.
