Winner of designer of the year at Dezeen Awards 2019, Studio Drift is an Amsterdam-based art studio led by Lonneke Gordijn and Ralph Nauta.
Founded in 2007, the studio creatively imitates natural phenomena to research and improve the impact of technological innovations on our environment.
The Dutch studio's work occupies a place between technology, nature, art, performance and design. The founders' ambition to make human applications more sustainable comes from a shared fascination for nature and technology.
Studio Drift’s work in product and furniture design has evolved into increasingly larger, often site-specific installations and interactive sculptures that they have realised all over the world. They collaborate with scientists, programmers, engineers, and other specialists in the development of projects.
Data and algorithms derived from natural phenomena often form the basis for Studio Drift’s work. With the help of technologies, they translate this data into poetic, meditative experiences.
Their installation Freedom Franchise won the award for lighting design of the year.
Judges comments: "Studio Drift has consistently produced good work over the last two years. They have successfully accomplished a lot of ambitious projects that explore the relationship between nature and technology, as well as our relationship with technology."
