Lu + Architects has converted 1960s rice barns into exhibition halls in Wuzhen, adding skylights and workshops.

The black asphalt walls have been designed to keep out moisture, while brick columns on the side walls resist the lateral thrust of the grain pile. Grain conveyors bring movement and vitality to the quiet granary.

The bare roof structure, large windows and holes in the walls have been opened to increase natural daylight into the space.

The barren concrete ground doubles as a space for sunbathing and as a playground for the neighborhood children.

This project has been longlisted in the rebirth project category of Dezeen Awards 2020.
