Shau has built a library that doubles as a community centre in Semarang, Indonesia, featuring a hammock-style floor and a large communal swing.

Microlibrary Warak Kayu is constructed entirely from FSC-certified wood products; a living educational spot for wood material and techniques. It is designed around passive climatic design aspects.

The diffuse-reflected sunlight is designed for reading without artificial lighting, which allows energy to be saved.

The performative, deep brise-soleil facade is inspired by the Zollinger Bauweise with its distinctive diamond pattern.

The library volume is elevated, like a traditional house on stilts, freeing the space underneath for multiple activities on the seating tribune. For kids, there is a wooden swing.

The project is part of the Microlibrary series aimed to increase reading interest for low-income neighbourhoods.

This project has been longlisted in the small building category of Dezeen Awards 2020.
