Folkform has created a chair from two planks of ash wood to challenge traditional wood-bending techniques.
The Plank Chair's legs and seat are made from straight offcuts, which reference its origin. The backrest curves at a complicated angle, which is achieved by moistening and steaming an ash plank, before bending it and leaving it to harden into its distinctive shape.
Folkform has experimented with techniques for forming wood into curves and working with the standard dimensions of a raw plank, which is not usually bent in this way.
This project has been longlisted in the seating design project category of Dezeen Awards 2020.
