Æbeløen’s 146 residences inhabit the last vacant plot in Aarhus' historic Øgade neighbourhood adjacent to the city’s botanical garden.
Designed around a cobbled "shared-space" streetscape and green courtyards, the architecture emerges from an architectural “sampling” of the surrounding urban context.
It mixes, combines, and tweaks the Øgade area’s distinctive architectural elements to create jumps, surprising variations, and interesting spatial sequences throughout the neighbourhood, reinterpreting the historic Øgade architecture in a new, contemporary tune. Rainwater collection as a visible, recreational element combined with green facades create an urban habitat for a variety of flora and fauna.
This project has been longlisted in the housing project category of Dezeen Awards 2021.
