This visitors center defines an important touchpoint within Better Place Forests; a new sustainable alternative to traditional cemeteries located in Northern California’s coastal range.
Perched on a wooded rise, and framing a view of the forests beyond, the visitors center delineates the threshold of the visitors’ journey. It invites a moment to pause and orient, before moving into the protected memorial groves, where trees rather than headstones mark the places where loved ones are remembered. The experience immerses visitors in the forest, while the center’s Corten and redwood construction convey a reassuring sense of permanence.
This project has been longlisted in the cultural building category of Dezeen Awards 2021.
