Vakwerk Architecten has transformed an old boiler house, once the main source of energy for Delft Technical University, into a co-working space that forms a link between the town and its university.
The co-working space is now home to the studio itself as well as local entrepreneurs. Sustainability was one of the main design principles and was achieved by respecting its industrial character, the reuse of materials, and by making the building as energy-efficient as possible. The Vakwerkhuis has been reborn as a vibrant community hub in a restored and revitalised listed building.
This project has been longlisted in the rebirth project category of Dezeen Awards 2021.
