The project showcases a large art display and offers a new, lively communal space for the neighbourhood.
Kumamoto was struck by a major earthquake in 2016, leaving people without access to baths.
Art, projected onto a canvas of rotated triangular hinoki, Japanese cypress, appears and disappears at different vantage points as the bather circulates in space. Hinoki is locally abundant, durable, and has natural moisture control.
Terrazzo walls and floors offer an even surface for easy maintenance, and an organic texture and colour. Brass coloured faucets and handrails offer accents to the muting effects of the terrazzo covered surfaces.
This project has been longlisted in the leisure and wellness interior category of Dezeen Awards 2021.
