Promotion: Royal Academy of Arts' 31st Annual Architecture Lecture will be hosted by the founders of French architectural firm Bruther Stéphanie Bru and Alexandre Theriot, of which Dezeen is live-streaming as part of a media partnership.

This year's lecture takes place on 18 July and is titled Spare Parts. Bru and Theriot will examine Bruther's commitment to public space, flexible building and social and environmental sustainability.

Bruther specialises in public projects, with the aim of developing socially engaged and responsible architecture that improves the lives of those who use their buildings.

The practice's projects are intended to adapt over time, such as its Student Residence and Reversible Car Park project, where Bruther created a space that could be adapted and rebuilt as both housing and parking, depending on the current needs of the location.

The project was shortlisted for the Mies van der Rohe Award 2022.

"Bruther's portfolio boasts an impressive range of public projects, ranging from cultural centres, student and public housing, to libraries and arts centres," said Royal Academy of Arts. "This focus on the civic duty of the architect is heavily influenced by a belief in the values of the French welfare state, something that both Bru and Theriot grew up with and are not keen to abandon in the face of current societal change."

"They are confident in the power of architecture to have a positive impact on communities and are dedicated to delivering socially engaged and responsible buildings that improve the quality of people's lives," Royal Academy of Arts continued.

Bru and Theriot are also professors of Architecture and Design in the Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule (ETH) Zürich, Switzerland.

London's Royal Academy of Arts' Annual Architecture Lecture invites major figures in the profession to discuss their work and philosophies. Previous speakers include Swiss architect Peter Zumthor, Chinese architect Wang Shu and Indian architect Balkrishna V. Doshi.

In past years, lecturers were chosen based purely on the importance of their existing work, but Bruther has been selected for its future potential, particularly the practice's dedication to socially engaged architecture and work on public buildings, according to Royal Academy of Arts.

The lecture will begin at 6:30 pm on 18 July and will be held in The Benjamin West Lecture Theatre, Royal Academy of Arts.
