John McAslan + Partners designed The Burrell Collection in Glasgow, UK.
This project was led by John McAslan + Partners as a five-year £68m revitalisation project of The Burrell Collection – the most comprehensive modernisation of the Category-A listed museum since its opening to international acclaim in 1983.
The seminal 20th-century building houses 9,000 internationally significant works of art, however, in recent years, the building had become unfit for purpose.
John McAslan + Partners' scheme repaired the building’s decaying envelope, markedly improving building services and energy efficiency – while receiving an Excellent BREEAM rating.
The transformation sensitively adapted the interior to meet modern visitor needs, including volumetric and layout interventions which allow much greater flexibility and access to the collection – along with carefully-crafted contemporary design throughout.
This project has been longlisted in the cultural building category of Dezeen Awards 2022.
