Anarchitect has created a niche six-room hotel in Sri Lanka that breaks free from colonial-inspired design to explore new boundaries.
The project is an independent new build boutique hotel that pays homage to the Sri Lankan Tropical-Modernist architectural movement.
Located amongst dense coastal palm groves on the footprint of an old tsunami-destroyed house, it offers an authentic Sri Lankan experience that doesn’t conform to colonial-inspired design as a restrictive anchor.
All materials are simple, honest, locally sourced and chosen for their longevity, employing Sri-Lankan craftsmen and techniques. The facades are purposely dynamic and interactive, creating constant permeability between spaces and dialogue between guests and nature.
With its uniquely recognisable indoor-outdoor vernacular, the hotel's modern-progressive design still feels authentically of place.
This project has been longlisted in the hospitality building category of Dezeen Awards 2022.
