TAKA has created a reimagined historic gate lodge and derelict stone hunting kennels in the Irish countryside to connect with the beauty of its surroundings.
The project involved the extension and refurbishment of two listed buildings to make unique new homes for an Irish client and their extended family. It adds a layer of generous living space to the lodge and kennels while avoiding overwhelming the diminutive protected structures.
The new additions were partially sunken into the land so that their overall bulk was diminished. Landscape elements such as the wildflower meadow, new stables, and reflecting pond are incorporated to create an immediate connection with the beauty of the surrounding countryside.
The extensions are intended to recall informal agricultural additions which have often been made to the many defunct historic structures which dot the Irish landscape. The project has allowed this family to remain on this site, enjoy the landscape more directly and ensured the continuity of the historic structures into the future.
This project has been longlisted in the rural house category of Dezeen Awards 2022.
