Professorship for Green Technologies at TUM School of Engineering and Design has created a roof structure for a gathering space to meet, cook and eat in southwest Germany.

The project is located within Neue Kunst am Ried Sculpture Park, a space in Baden-Württemberg for artists to exhibit work that engages with nature, and where stone tables and an oven sit for visitors to gather, eat, cook, and discuss.

The design task was to create a roof that provides shelter to the tables while allowing the trees to continue to grow. The structure interacts with the landscape by using the living trees as the main load-bearing structure, with branches and trunks guiding all loads to the ground where the building is anchored solely by roots, while minimal use of technical elements preserves the play of light through the canopy.

This project has been longlisted in the small building category of Dezeen Awards 2022.
