Anna Carin Design Studio has reconfigured and restored a former bakery in Sydney to provide a sophisticated living space.

The project is located on the site of what was originally a corner shop and a commercial bakery, built in the early 20th century.

It creates the feel of an unexpected city oasis, with an emphasis on light and nature through the use of soft colours, botanical wallpaper and an abundance of pots with greenery.

Many of the light fittings were sourced from vintage and and antique shops – the chandeliers in the entrance were originally hanging in the David Jones store on Elizabeth Street at the same time this building was built – while existing pieces from the clients (a potter and ceramist) were added alongside elements that tied these to the new space. Furniture from Thonet and Artek was introduced in recognition of shared values of craftsmanship and innovation.

This project has been longlisted in the house interior category of Dezeen Awards 2022.
