Expolight has created a lighting scheme for a synagogue in Kyiv that adapts with the structure's dual form.
The synagogue has two forms thanks to a mechanical design that sees it operate as an open and a closed structure, akin to that of a folded and open book.
The lighting was designed to enhance the concept of transformation by shaping the atmosphere in a nuanced manner. The dynamism of the structure called for positioning of floor lamps so that the synagogue could move and still be illuminated. The ceiling is similarly illuminated, while adjusted light draws separate architectural accents on the walls offset by windows painted with light.
The result is a scheme that is uneven and accentuated, all the while adding a subtle dramatic atmosphere.
This project has been longlisted in the architectural lighting design category of Dezeen Awards 2022.
