The Beacon by Climate Art
James Harris

Climate Art has produced a commissioned work on the English coast from artist Joseph Williams with structural expertise from AKT II as a temporary public art installation to highlight the dangers of climate change.

The Beacon is a temporary public art installation that combines traditional structural bamboo with modern engineering and computational techniques. It was first installed on a beach at Rye Harbour Nature Reserve, on the southern coast of the UK, for five weeks during the summer of 2021.

It is a demountable sculpture commissioned by Climate Art and designed and hand-constructed by the British artist Joseph Williams, in conjunction with structural engineering and computational expertise from the London-based practice AKT II. The site-responsive work explores the interconnected relationship between people and their environment in an area defined by its changing coastline, highlighting the interplay between the urban and natural ecosystems of the ancient town of Rye.

This project has been longlisted in the installation design category of Dezeen Awards 2022.
