Merk X has designed the renovation of The Groote Museum in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
This project was the renovation and update of the mid-19th century Groote Museum, part of the Amsterdam Zoo, which began in 2012.
Merk X's design boasts innovative constructive and spatial solutions, including the structural strengthening of the exhibition halls and galleries and the meticulous restoration of the characteristic double staircase that has been fitted almost imperceptibly.
New elements, such as the important addition of a basement – a radical endeavour – are contemporary. Every facet has been given its place in this spectacular new composition and reinforces the two guiding principles of the original design: to provide air and happiness.
This project has been shortlisted in the civic and cultural interiors category of Dezeen Awards 2022.
