Local Projects has designed the Greenwood Rising: Black Wall Street History Center exhibition in Tulsa, United States.

This project commemorates the 100-year anniversary of the Tulsa Race Massacre where over two days in 1921, a mob destroyed the district known as Black Wall Street, leaving thousands homeless, hundreds injured, and an unknown number killed.

"In 2016, the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre Centennial Commission formed to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the massacre, and engaged us to share the unvarnished truth about Massacre," said designers Local Projects. "We knew we needed to do more to tell the story of the resilient innovators who built, and then rebuilt, Black Wall Street, and to share the economic, social, and political forces of oppression that existed then and are still present."

The result is Greenwood Rising, an exhibition highlighting the Arc of Oppression section that frames the Massacre through the lens of growing anti-Blackness in America.

Visitors may enter an "emotional exit" corridor that bypasses potentially triggering content, or progress into a timeline of events leading up to the massacre, and a recreation of the massacre narrated by survivors, projected onto structures representing the barbershop's destroyed facade.

This project has been shortlisted in the exhibition design category of Dezeen Awards 2022.
