Bio-Integrated Design MArch/MSc at the Bartlett School of Architecture
The Bio-Integrated Design MArch/MSc course at the Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London (UCL), teaches students a combination of scientific methods and design experimentation to develop innovative bio-integrated systems.
School: The Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL
Course: Bio-Integrated Design MArch/MSc
Location: London, UK
Course dates: September 2023 to September 2025
Application deadline: 31 May 2023
Our future human habitat will be shaped by revolutions in biotechnology and computation that address the impact of climate change and our biodiversity crisis.
Bio-integrated design (Bio-ID) takes these phenomena as the foundation for novel design solutions that shape our built environment.
Applicants can choose from two distinct bio-integrated design courses – an MArch and an MSc degree – depending on whether they seek to specialise in scientific or architecture, design and art outputs.
Taught jointly by two world-leading departments at UCL – The Bartlett School of Architecture and Biochemical Engineering – Bio-ID makes use of cutting-edge methodologies while providing a unique platform for the next generation of radical thinkers to tackle the greatest challenges of our time.
Bio-ID attracts students from different educational backgrounds, including architecture, biology and bioscience, engineering, fine arts, graphic design, product design, fashion design, landscape architecture, urban planning, computer science and pharmacology.
Students develop research in bio-design by employing novel lab protocols, along with advanced computation and manufacturing skills.
Key research areas include circular economy, sustainable materials, robotics and building typologies.
With advanced expertise in design and science, graduates are uniquely prepared for a broad scope of jobs, including leading architecture, design and engineering companies, teaching and research labs, and their own start-ups.
Applications to this course have now closed.
