Notan Office has developed Duchesse in Brussels, Belgium.
Duchesse includes three multi-oriented volumes with private outdoor spaces overlooking a common garden – while the ground floor is organised with programs that belong to everyone, creating a strong sense of community.
The architects paid respect to the original industrial identity of the site, using materials in their natural state and reusing elements present before the project.
The new volumes' shapes are adapted to the former sheds' outlines, generating unique spatial qualities, and the living areas and bedrooms are situated towards the façade to maximise natural light – with technical elements are hidden in the width of the neighbouring walls.
This project has been longlisted in the housing project category of Dezeen Awards 2023.
