Santiago Calatrava has reconstructed the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and National Shrine in New York City, United States.
"St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and National Shrine is not only a remarkable piece of architecture, but it also holds immeasurable cultural and historical significance for New York City," said Santiago Calatrava.
As the only religious building destroyed on 9/11, its reconstruction serves as an important symbol of resilience and renewal for the city.
Designed by Santiago Calatrava, it honours the traditions of Greek Orthodoxy – while weaving in the complex and emotional history of the WTC Campus.
As a result, a striking yet modern structure stands out in a dense and modern urban landscape that is said to speak to the resilience of all New Yorkers.
This project has been longlisted in the civic project category of Dezeen Awards 2023.
