Forest-Wood Archi-Tect has designed Forest-Tree Classroom in Hsinchu, Taiwan.
The Forest-Tree Classroom project is a hands-on shelter, built with a sustainable canopy consisting of the four surrounding cedars from governmental forestry to transform a functional venue into an open space for environmental lessons.
Without any nails or glue, the shell was formed by the architect's 'steam-bending tree' technique, which locally boiled the rainwater to generate hot vapour for softening and bending the middle trunks before connecting them into one diamond frame as the main structure.
The arch force is supported between two sides of the cedars, while the rest of the trunks were separately formed into the spine-rib and roof shingle systems.
This project has been longlisted in the education project category of Dezeen Awards 2023.
