Höweler + Yoon has designed the Moongate Bridge in Pudong, Shanghai.
Inspired by traditional Chinese moon gates that frame the landscape to alter perceptions of scale, distance, and nature, the Moongate Bridge project employs a similar technique, rotated in plan to frame the water and its reflection of the sky.
While the Moongate Bridge is sited at the main entrance to the Shanghai Expo Cultural Park, it is conceived of as a destination, not just a means of crossing – more comprehensive than long, its edges are articulated to form viewing platforms and gathering spaces.
Like the Chinese garden, it is not about objects, but rather relationships between views and vantage points.
This project has been longlisted in the infrastructure and transport project category of Dezeen Awards 2023.
