Yi Design has created a porous brick made from recycled ceramic waste.

Permeable YiBrick is a porous brick made from recycled ceramic waste, a new innovative circular product. Due to their water permeability, there is potential for them to be used as public infrastructure in building sponge cities, a solution for water management.

The studio has collected 5,000 tonnes of ceramic waste from over 100 local factories and studios. Since 2021, 82 tonnes worth of waste have been redirected from landfills and made into bricks.

The wastewater and the fine dust from the crushing of the raw waste material are all reused in the material production.

This project has been longlisted in the sustainable design (building product) category of Dezeen Awards 2023.
